“The juxtaposition of then and now was overwhelming and still affects me when I hear it today.”
My first thought on considering what to pick from a soundtrack of music which accompanied our lives together over 36 years was impossible. However, one song forced it's way into my consciousness.
One minute it's 1984 and we are enjoying the optimism and joyous nature of this song, alongside others on the album including "You're The Best Thing" (which would become our song). Then fast forward to Paul Weller performing in Thetford Forest on Midsummer's Night in 2019.
It evoked absolute joy from memories of our first year together but equally a deep sadness as to where we found ourselves that evening towards the end of John's life. We instantly connected to the song, singing at the top of our voices and holding on to one another with tears in our eyes at the same time.
The juxtaposition of then and now was overwhelming and still affects me when I hear it today.
This song reminds me of John's bravery and positivity; he was adamant about not giving up, therefore I'm still shouting to the top in your memory John E.
