My then partner Derek and I discovered Richard Hawley at Latitude festival.

We hadn't been together long, I had been to many festivals but this was Derek's first and he wasn't too sure how much he would enjoy the camping and long days discomforts.

We went to see Richard Hawley's set because of the Pulp connections and Derek loved guitar musicians. We were transfixed when Open Up Your Door was played - such a meandering, multi-layered ode to love.

It became the song that defined our relationship and it was the song we played at the opening of our wedding a decade later as I walked down the aisle.

Sadly, Derek was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour a few years later. We played this song to him when he was ill at home, and then at his funeral a few short months later.

Six months after he died I listened to it on a loop all through my first birthday without him.

It is a song that is both uplifting and sorrowful at the same time.
It will always be about love, just love - our love.
