“The music permeates very deeply - I can’t explain it. ”
It was probably the summer of 1976 or 1977 that this piece of music came into my life.
I can't remember who bought the single for my Mum but it immediately became her favourite and was often playing on our old stereo in the front room of our family house in Somerset.
Looking back, I realise that it coincided with a time in her life when she had found a new sense of independence. I am the youngest of six children and Mum hadn't worked since marrying. But I guess I was getting older - so she had found herself a job at a nearby stately home which she absolutely loved. I don't think it was just about having her own money, it was more about a new sense of freedom and I wonder whether that's why she loved the lyrics so much - something about it being a new day? She certainly wasn't religious per se so her love of it was not on that level.
I remember that one of my sisters (I think) had to write out all the words on a scrappy piece of note paper which was carefully kept in the sleeve alongside the actual record so she could sing along.
I don't regularly listen to it - but whenever I do or if I hear it on the radio, the rolling notes of the piano make me well-up.
The music permeates very deeply - I can't explain it.
I miss my mum very very much x
