My dad hated my hard rock music, the title of this story was his comment on it.

One day he heard me playing ‘A Salty Dog’ - a song about the sea and the men who travel on it, and being a seafarer all his life he loved it and I had to buy him a copy of the single because he was wearing out my LP playing it all the time.

Every time his seafaring pals came to one of his notorious house parties they would play it in total silence.

When he passed away we played it at the crematorium as he sailed away on his last journey. Not a dry eye in the house.

I'm sure when he arrived at his final port of call he found:

"A sand so white
And sea so blue
No mortal place at all"
