Bright Side of Life
Music: Where I’m Going
Artist: Eels
Shared by: Emily for her brother
“Even though he had a short life, we all have so many great memories with him and I’m so grateful I had the honour of calling him my brother and being shaped by him.”
I'm struggling to pick one story and one song for my amazing brother (so I apologise for the length of this!) who we sadly lost 9 years ago to a brain tumour at the age of 33. I always have and always will look up to him and I really don't know how I would've turned out without his subtle guidance growing up!
This song he chose for his funeral and I remember listening to it over and over to express my grief and try to find comfort and understanding of how he must have felt. I believe this was a perfect song for his funeral. He was a big nature lover and very aware of the way the world was going.
"All you see, a world so full of need
And all I need is a pocket full of seeds"
He was a MASSIVE Eels fan and I listened to their music relentlessly after he died and found so much comfort in their music and lyrics. It was hard to narrow down on this one! (I recommend giving them a listen if you haven’t).
I have fond memories of hearing him sing along (badly) to Eels in his bedroom, he was never one for embarrassment and would always unapologetically be his dorky nerdy self!
He also ended on Monty Pythons 'Always look on the bright side of life' at the funeral, which is something he most definitely lived by, even throughout his illness. So much so I got it tattooed on me, and as I was in the waiting area of the tattooists, an Eels song played on the radio and I stopped mid sentence feeling it as a sign Luke was there with me.
Another song I toyed with was "We're not gonna make it" - Presidents of the United States of America, as I so thankfully have videos of Luke, my friend and myself dancing around to this is my bedroom back in the mid 2000s and it always makes me smile.
Even though he had a short life, we all have so many great memories with him and I'm so grateful I had the honour of calling him my brother and being shaped by him.
Love you Lukey.
