I was given the album one Christmas and my father and I danced round the lounge together. We never danced together before and not long after this he was taken ill.

I left home as soon as I had finished my A-levels. I had met the man who was to be my future husband but I always say that I left because I couldn’t bear watching Coronation Street.

My mother, on the other hand, says she was delighted that I left as she no longer had to listen my funeral music ie the music of Leonard Cohen.

My father and I shared a love of classical music. He had little money and would come home with prized second hand LPs from Berwick Street market. He introduced me to Beethoven, Elgar and Poulenc but the piece that always brings me to tears is Dance in the Old Fashioned Way by Charles Aznavour.
